A Course in Miracles Study Group

A Course in Miracles seeks to change the way you perceive yourself and the world. It seeks to remind you of what you really are, why you really came here, and what is the true nature of your relationship with God.

Helen Schucman, a professor of Medical Psychology at Columbia University, “scribed” the Course in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She said the material was dictated to her by an internal voice which she later identified as that of Jesus. William Thetford, her department head, prepared the Course for publication.

A Course in Miracles was first published in 1976, after Helen assigned the copyright for the material to the Foundation for Inner Peace, publisher of the Course. No author’s name appears on the cover, because the real author is the teacher that dwells within you.

The Course consists of three books, now published in a single volume: the Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. The Text sets forth the teachings contained in the Course. The Workbook for Students is a practical application of the Course’s teachings in 365 lessons. The Manual for Teachers answers many of the questions that students of the Course ask.

As the Course says, we humans have always believed that we are separate from God and each other. The Course says this illusion of separation is the cause of all human suffering. It says the separation never really occurred. We have been hallucinating all along.

The physical body is an illusion that seems to separate us from each other. The ego uses the body to prove to us that we are separate. It uses physical illness and death to reinforce our belief that we are physical bodies.

Just like our night-time dreams, our waking life is a dream. We are, in fact, asleep in Heaven, dreaming that we are having a physical experience. We can awaken spiritually and and discover we have been dreaming all along, just as we do when we wake up in the morning.

The Course says that everything here in the physical universe is temporary and therefore is, by definition, an illusion -- that is, not real. Everything we see around us is just a projection of our own minds.

In ACIM, salvation means being saved from the experience of separation from God and all the human ills that come from the belief in separation. A miracle is defined as a divine healing of human perception, in which our false perceptions of things like sickness and death are suspended.

Tens of thousands of students around the world are devoted to the Course. Study groups exist everywhere. In our group, we study the Course materials on our own at home. We then meet as scheduled to review and discuss these materials.

The Dr. David R. Hawkins Study Group

Dr. Hawkins (1927-2012) transitioned back to Spirit in September 2012. We miss his radiant presence, but he did leave us an enormous legacy of books, DVDs, and CDs that we use in our study group meetings...

David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D., is a well-known American psychiatrist, researcher, and spiritual teacher living in Sedona, Arizona. He is perhaps best known for his Scale of Consciousness, which he devised through applied kinesiology and which can be used to map the level of consciousness of any person, place or thing -- past or present.

According to Dr. Hawkins, everyone and everything can be calibrated on a scale from 1 to 1000. Jesus and Buddha calibrate at 1000, while Hitler calibrates at 40. Dr. Hawkins tells us that 75 percent of humanity still calibrates below 200 on the Scale. The average person’s calibration changes no more than five points or so in a lifetime. However, spiritual seekers can experience a jump of hundreds of points in a single lifetime.

Dr. Hawkins explains that the ego works constantly to maintain the illusion of physical “reality” and our fear blocks us from discovering the truth about what we really are. We have always believed that this fear-based illusion we live in is real. For that reason, institutions like the church, government, and mass media have been able to easily manipulate and control us throughout our dark and deceitful history. But Dr. Hawkins assures us that we can survive the human crisis we find ourselves in. We can rediscover our true “Self.”

He says that once we let go of our false belief that we are physical bodies, then we can begin to discover the truth. A profound sense of peace and feeling of “coming home” accompanies this discovery. Long ago during the "fall of man," we forgot what we really are. It’s time to remember.

We pop in and out of different levels of consciousness at various times. However, each of us has a predominant state that is “normal” for us. Rising from one level to another can radically change our lives in every way.

Because of your interest in all things spiritual -- including Dr. Hawkins’ teachings -- your level of consciousness is rising. As your LOC rises, your own life begins to change in astounding ways, and you start to radiate a healing effect on the rest of the world.

More and more people are beginning to awaken spiritually. This portends a global shift in consciousness for humanity as a whole. As Dr. Hawkins says, the single most important thing you can do in this lifetime is work to raise your level of consciousness.

You can get to know Dr. Hawkins' teachings by reading his eight books, watching his DVDs, and, of course, by participating in our Hawkins study group.

The Eckhart Tolle Meditation Group

Eckhart Tolle is a renowned spiritual teacher and author. He was born in Germany in 1948 and educated at the Universities of London and Cambridge. He has lived in Vancouver, Canada, since 1995.

In 1977, while studying philosophy in London at the age of 29, Tolle experienced a profound inner transformation that radically changed the course of his life. He had been suffering from long bouts of suicidal depression and says he was so miserable that he could not live with himself any longer. But he says he awoke one night from his sleep and experienced an epiphany. In that moment when he awoke, he suddenly realized, “If I cannot live with myself, there must be two of me: the ‘I’ and the ‘self’ that ‘I’ cannot live with. Maybe, I thought, only one of them is real.”

For two years following this epiphany, he spent much of his time sitting in what he calls “a state of deep bliss" on park benches in central London, “watching the world go by.” After that, he began working as a spiritual counselor and teacher for individuals and small groups in London.

Tolle is the author of The Power of Now (1997) and A New Earth (2005), which are widely regarded as two of the most influential spiritual books of our time.

In The Power of Now, Tolle says: To make the journey into the Now, we need to leave our analytical mind and the ego behind.

In A New Earth, he says: Humanity now, perhaps more than at any previous time, has an opportunity to create a new, saner, more loving world.

In addition to The Power of Now and A New Earth, Tolle has written a book designed for meditative reading entitled Stillness Speaks (2003).

At the core of Tolle’s teachings lies the transformation of consciousness, a spiritual awakening that he sees as the next step in human evolution. This awakening consists of transcending our current, ego-based state of consciousness.

Tolle writes: “If you are not living this moment, you are not really living.” By not living in the Now, you are missing the beauty “that is always accessible to you,” he counsels.

In 2008, a New York Times writer called Tolle “the most popular spiritual author in the United States.” In 2011, Tolle was listed by the Watkins Review as the most spiritually influential person in the world.

But always humble and serene, Tolle writes in the introduction to Stillness Speaks: “A true spiritual teacher does not have anything to teach in the conventional sense of the word, does not have anything to give or add to you, such as new information, beliefs, or rules of conduct. The only function of such a teacher is to help you remove that which separates you from the truth.”

In our meetings, we follow Eckhart Tolle's "silent local group" format in which we practice Presence through meditative silence. We begin with silent meditation, followed by an Eckhart Tolle audio or video recording and then further silent meditation. For further information, click here: Eckhart Tolle Local Groups.

The Eckhart Tolle meditation group began to meet in October 2011.
